I'm feeling a little… erm, not sure. I'll get back to that.

I got an email some time ago regarding an editorial I wrote even longer ago called Our Raison d'Écrire, from an Indian publishing company called Cyberwit (Cyberwit.net) . Really enjoyed the story etc would like to publish it in an anthology of short stories called Passion. No fee, but you get the option to buy it on the cheap. (US$15)

Oh. Right.

I blasted along to the site and sent them a copy, then went back to Hotmail and largely forgot about it.

Turns out they were serious.

According to a brace of emails I recieved recently, Our Raison d'Écrire has been accepted as one of 73 short stories which can be described using the following quote:

In reply to:

These short stories employ complex techniques to depict the often-unresolvable dilemmas of the human predicament. Some of the major themes in Passion are human isolation, alienation, and personal trauma, such as anxiety; love and hate; male-female relationships; family and the conflict of generations; initiation from innocence to experience; friendship and brotherhood; illusion and reality; self-delusion and self-discovery; the individual in conflict with society's institutions; mortality; spiritual struggles.

Erm… are we talking about the same thing?

Okay, skip the unwholesome stuff. Somehow, a short, rubbishy thing I first intended to put onto the forum has got through an actual reviewing process and has been published for the world to see.

Oh yes, I remember how I'm feeling. Ever so slightly confused.

Ciao,
Duncan

Many of us have received the same e-mail. Don't want to burst your bubble. I got one over the weekend from a Random House subsidiary. Careful where you tread.

Unlike true anthologies, where writers are paid for their contributions, contributors to vanity anthologies pay the publisher. The International Library of Poetry, Iliad Press, Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum, The Amherst Society, The Poets' Guild, Poetry Press, Poetry Unlimited, The National Archives, Cyberwit.com and JMW Publishing are just a few of the anthology companies that either charge for publication or require purchase of the anthology. Though most vanity anthology companes are based in the US, vanity anthologizing is an international phenomenon--for instance, the Poetry Institute of Africa and Cyberwit of India.

For the most part, vanity anthologizers do publish the promised anthologies, and those who pay do get their poems or stories printed (or embossed, or put on a plaque, or whatever). So the vanity anthology scheme doesn't really qualify as a scam. But it is deceptive and misleading--especially in portraying the anthologies as a real literary credit poets can be proud of. In reality, the anthologies are available by order only, and most are sold to the contributors themselves or to their friends and family. Anthologies never see the inside of a bookstore, and aren't purchased by libraries. And because of the poor quality of most of the poems and stories, anthology credits are not respected by publishing professionals, no matter what the anthology companies' ads or websites say.

Sadly, many people are taken in by this deception, which is aided by magazines and newspapers that report on local writers' inclusion in the anthologies as if they were a genuine literary market. Elderly people are a particular target, as are teens, new and/or poor writers and other mediocre writers whose work has been rejected constantly by legitimate publishers. Moreover, there are vanity anthologizers that specialize in soliciting teachers, who don't realize the anthologies aren't a legitimate venue and are very willing to recruit student participants.

In other words, CYBERWIT.NET is a scam. RUN, don't walk unless you're fond of having your pocket picked. This is not a legitimate publishing credit and the resultant anthology, if published, will be of very poor quality and YOU'LL BE CHARGED FOR IT!

But this isn't being published. This is VANITY PRESS at its worst. Anyone who succumbs to this temptation is paying to have his or her work published. THERE'S NO HONOR IN THAT.

Now I see, I used to be an Editor in Chief of a vanity publication in school. As editor in chief, I got infuriated by the fact that I was not allowed to bar poor works. Every submission had to be published. Even the crap. I misunderstood what this cyberwit was, but now I realize, it's just a scam.

I recieved one of those, I thought my work was going to be published whether I purchased or not (thank god for reading the fine print)

Okay, so where do I stand if I am under no obligation to buy the book, have not submitted a single coin and have not been asked for or given out any credit card details?

Never mind. Just some champing at the bit, I suppose.

Not that I really give a damn, to be perfectly honest. I'm not getting money, nor am I giving money, the work I gave wasn't something I was particularly impressed with, so what's done is done and there is very little point in trying to undo it.

Such is life.

Ciao,
Duncan

Cyberwit is genuine. My poem is also in Voyages. They delivered the book to me though I was required to pay $15. They also provided me another book as gift with Voyages. I don't mind paying only $15 for such a high quality book. I have been published in many countries but I would like to say Voyages is the best book so far. Though it is right that authors must receive free copy in which their work appear but in case of Cyberwit they are taking only $15 and giving books worth $40. In my opinion, Cyberwit is the best publisher in the field of literature and poetry.
