Hello all!

I spent 6 days in a small rustic cottage along the southern shore of Canandaigua Lake. One of the Finger Lakes in central New York state. We were about 30 feet from the shore and the weather was gorgeous! We had rain the first morning but that cleared up pretty early. I also got to do some fishing and got a bit of sun and natural vitamin D.

Plans are to do two weeks there next year, but we shall see.

Lee_R,

Good to have you back!

If there was ever a time to take a vacation and not miss much around here, you timed it perfectly. Hopefully the rest of the people on holiday will come back to the forums soon as well.

Maybe when all the kiddos are back in school their parents will have more time for the Internet. Or the college kids will be itching for advice.

Or is that going to be advice on how to stop the itching?

I always seem to forget which is the more appropriate question to this little gathering of ours!

Last Friday morning my son and I took to the waters of the lake in my son's canoe to do some fishing. The fish were not co-operating and I only had one solid hit but the little bugger got away! Damnit! We had paddled ou about 3/4 of the way across the lake and were suddenly swamped and flipped the canoe & ended up in the water. A sharp young man at the local marina saw what had happened and quickly came to our assistance and hauled our dripping carcasses to shore. Once we were safe on dry land it was time to take an inventory. Lost were a 9 yr old baseball cap, my titanium frame glasses, cellphone, rod & reel, digital camera and a knife I've had since I was about 16 years old. All items are replaceable and nobody was hurt, so all in all a good day!

Lee,

First rule of canoeing!

Everything that you don't want to lose stays back at the house/ hotel.

Second rule: Everything else goes into ziplock bags with enough air in them so they'll float!

I lost a set of keys once at the race track. The spare set was in my pocket so I never noticed until I got home. An antique flat little engraved screwdriver key fob from my dad was on that set. Never got it back. \:\(

But at least whomever ended up with them didn't end up getting my track car and ransacking my house.

Oh, the reason for leaving the good stuff back at the house or hotel? ALMOST more stuff is lost to thieves who break into worried canoers cars than get submerged in the lake.

One very popular rafting site in Texas features a college scuba team that will retrieve your stuff for a price. The usual barter is all the beer in your cooler. They make a fortune and get to stay permanently drunk at the rapids all summer!
