OldMike,
I have had three jobs in the last bit. 3.5 years, 8 years and the current stint of about 14. The last two I got recruited out of right before they went under a year after I left.
The current one has absorbed three failing companies to stay afloat. Very traumatic changes until the shockwaves settled down. Pretty committed group of owners. So far they have really done some aggressive painful preemptive planning.
I'm not sure what your profession is, but even at your age you hopefully have some good options. I knew an engineer that was tired of getting laid off all the time. So he trained for a medical posistion. A little demeaning at first, but it became a well paying secure job with benefits. Then he turned his hobbies into a small business on the side.
I have known a lot of people who have a regular job, like Walmart, while they set themselves up as either consultants or freelancers in their chosen field.
The best option I have to offer is to look for a small startup company in your trained specialty. Startups WILL pay for one or two stable older workers who really know their stuff. You have to train incoming noobies, so they can keep their other employees cheap, and you have to help hold things together The growing pains are often frustrating, but it's a good challenging gig.
Finding entrepeneurs that are worty of your trust is what's hard.
Ten years ago one of my skillsets peaked and was in very high demand. Got headhunted about three times, but always stayed put. Good decision. Don't leave good owners for a couple of extra bucks.
But since that peak, I dropped 30,000 grand a year. It's taken me all these years to get even close back to that level. And the cost of living has eaten me alive since then so it's not quite the same.
Seeing what my parents and step parents have gone thru, it's hard to think that there is a 'golden age' of earning. If I just had the foresight and discipline to stuff more money away . . .
The last advice is to lookup the hot list of jobs looking to be short. Government still offers training funds for people willing to go into them, no matter what their age.
