Basically - yes - and to a bruised anonymous ego at that.

Thanks then, I guess every once in a while I might take myself a little too seriously anyways.

One thing I have learnt. When a fan writes you a private comment and says, "Loved your story, can you read and comment on one of mine?" From now on I will either ignore or simply reply with a soft and compassionate "No thank you!"

Have a good one.

HG

Wow. I guess people can be pretty ruthless on this site. I submitted a couple of stories today but they obviously haven't been approved yet. They did okay on another site but it's a matter of time before I get some harsh comments. I guess all the sites are that way. People are ballsy over the net.

I know someone developing a new erotic story site and he's just going with a Like (not the Facebook one) button to avoid this whole sticky issue of voting. So no voting someone down, or getting nasty feedback from an author. If you like a story you can say so, and that's it. I think it's a good idea.

I consider all my stories stroke stories.

If I don't get at least someone stroking or turning on her vibrator then I consider the story a failure. ;-)

I agree with that. If I don't turn the reader on at some point, I've failed.

I have a handful of stories here, actually both hands

They do have pretty good ratings, certainly good enough to make me happy with them.

I also get a good number of comments including one idiot who I finally just blocked because I know me getting the last word in pissed him off and he was just trying to get to me.... HA HA I win.

Voting is a good thing as it does provide feedback. I think it would be a very neat addition to the process were we to be able to receive specific feedback from other authors segregated from the rest.

It's easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize, the criticism is more meaningful if it comes from someone who actually does something other than cruise the site with baseless opinions.

Authors have a skin in the game... readers have nothing to lose by giving a low score because they don't understand the concept.

Maybe peer votes could be presented where they can be seen only by authors.

If the general readership likes a story but my peers vote low because of technical issues, I can see where I need to improve, making the feedback much more meaningful.

Just a thought.... I'm sure Art will be putting out a contract on me should many of us agree and he is faced with the task of figuring out how to do it but it would be a very useful tool.

Perhaps we should simply move to a system where you can flag whether you like something without the contentious issue of having to score their work. I was berated by an author the other day when I gave them a 9 and explained that while I enjoyed their story I had though one they wrote a few weeks ago was better. I seemed that I was expected to give a perfect 10 just for liking something.
Oh well you can't win.

Despite the frustration expressed by autors when we receiv a less than glowing review, I believe most of us would vote to keep the current voting system. Regardless of the type of system a site implements, it will never be perfect and neither will our stories for that matter. Yet, we strive for that perfect 10, an illusive and in most cases an unattainable goal. For those that take writing seriously we/they will strive to improve and that may be the standard we should all aspire to.

This discussion reminds me of the Academy Awards / Oscars. Often a movie that has been written and acted out brilliantly receives due praise from industry peers, but receives a contrary vote at the box office. Indicating that generally speaking the public is more interested in the entertainment value of the movie more than the technical quality of the writing and acting. I think that applies here just as equally.

That said I do like the idea of including a monitoring system that only authors could see as it relates to votes from our peers. However, some of the most heated exchanges may arise between authors. \:o

Best regards,

HG
