I read someone's story today and I voted and gave it a 6 because that's how I honestly felt about it. I explained that I thought it lacked description necessary for a voyeur story, it did not seem very believable and it had a lot of grammatical errors. I said I thought it was okay for a "stroke story," but that's about it. I will not embarass the author by posting his name or the story, but this is the response I got:
Sorry to hear you didn't like it.
All of the stories on here are "stroke" stories....aren't they?
Anyway...I apologize for the grammatical errors...I write using a blackberry at the airport usually and I miss a few things my PC would normally catch.

And he emailed again to say:
I should also add that the comments you made make you sound very arrogant. I am ranked #43 on the top 100 authors on this site so in spite of the opinion you have there are others who enjoy a quick and dirty read.
You've been an "author" for 10 years? What are you ranked on this site?
It's fags like you who make this site a drag. It's meant to be a place to share "fantasy" stories....yet you comment that my story doesn't sound plausible.
If I was looking for a literary critique it most certainly would not be found on an erotic sory site.
No wonder you are single.
I've received way worse comments in emails than I sent him and took it in stride. So I just wanted to say this guy's an angry a$$hole and if you're that sensitive maybe you're not ready to be posting your stories yet.

Some of the, so-called, authors here take themselves much too seriously. I, for one, could care less what scores I'm given. I write for my pleasure and think it's nice if someone else enjoys the works too.
Personally, I never vote less than the top. I was always taught if you don't have something nice to say, then say nothing at all.

I rarely vote unless I'm going to vote high, but the voting does serve a purpose, in theory, to aid other readers. I would never vote anyone a "1", but between 5 and 10 it can help steer our fellow readers. For me, I'll look at anything from a high 7's and on up, because I know how easily the voting can be skewed, but if something is voted below that it probably isn't worth your time because a LOT of people have voted it low.
I do not, however, consider the voting as any kind of validation of my own work.

Sometimes it is just that the author has picked the wrong site.

The system is what it is. No matter how you do it, some will find fault with it and others will abuse it. Has any author on here not gotten the obligatory 5 in one of his/her stories? I think getting that in a story or three is validation that you are doing something right.
Oh, I looked up author #43 in the top authors list and its a woman, not a man. The one on each side (42, 44) are also women. So, eigther the stats have shifted since he wrote you or he was lying. Or, maybe he is a she.

It's funny, I never thought to check. He's not number 43 on either list. And on the Most Favorited list I am number 32 today, and ahead of him. Neither of us in the other list.
If I was chasing votes I know what to write. I know what I've written in the past, by genre, what was most popular, but I write what I want, which I would recommend to everyone. Life's not a contest. I write what turns me on and hopefully some people want to come along for the ride.
Did you think to reply to him with "your comments make you a pompous, arrogant, bigoted ass and I'm not the only one to think this - in fact an author who is usually between 11-8 on the list also thinks this and thinks you should get off your high horse and remove your head from your arse!"
