I have never written a story without making lots of grammatical errors. My thoughts are quicker than I'm able to type and If I try to be too critical as I write, I lose my train of thought! I'm also dyslectic and it's not uncommon for me to reverse letters then miss those spelling error when I try to edit.

I just take for granted that my rates will suffer because of this.I don't mind it when my substandard spelling is brought to my attention,. The same goes for grammar, It's been years since I last attended school. If someone to offered to edit my story, I'd see no reason to take offense.

What does irk me is when I intentionally use poor grammar to bring out my characters personality and get called out for it.

I.E " I ain't gonna tell ya'll agin, git yer ass outta here!"

And some English Policeman tells me I should have written, " I'm not going to tell you people again, move your mule elsewhere!"

I mean after all, some of the greatest writers in the world {Not that I'd ever be one!) used poor grammer to illustrate the simplicity of their characters!

I put little importance on the rating, it's the joy of creating that's important. To take your imagination out for a walk and hope you pass along some pleasure along the way!

I had a discussion about dialogue once where someone had commented about partial sentences in dialogue during a sex seen.
It was deliberately written that way to emphasise the breathless nature of such conversations.
I think I ended up telling them that if they thought in whole sentences during sex they must be doing it wrong.

Yeah. What's in quotes should be evaluated by a different set of standards than what is out of quotes.

They should try reading something like Ian M Banks' "Feersum Endjinn" where the whole damn book is written is a weird dialect.

He might even try "Huckleberry Finn" for some non-grammatical dialog.

And I believe Hemingway had a lot of sentence fragments.

I'm not a fan. Never could see the appeal. Maybe being forced to read The Sun Also Rises every damn year in high school had something to do with turning me off to him.

In the history of mankind, there has always been two kinds of people, the first have a dream and set about making it a reality, they face hardships along the way and some even fail to see their dream materialise, but they tried, they got in the game, and they believed they could make a difference.

The second type of person has a dream, but does nothing about it. they think it's stupid, they find reasons not to attempt anything in their life, and at the same time these very people criticise other people who do make the effort.

Unless these people actually go out and try, their words of criticism mean nothing, unless they've suffered for their dream, how can they understand the effort and imagination that goes into creating something.

As an author, i gladly accept criticism from other authors, i also accept criticism from readers who are happy to give me an explanation why they felt my story was substandard. yet unless you actually put your head above the parapit in the knowledge that people will try and shoot you down, there's no point worrying about criticism.

I've had some really sharp e-mails from people who enjoy their own empty words, yet long after both them and i are gone....my stories will live on as long as this site does....what legacy will they leave. there e-mails always get deleted.

The true mark of courage is not the absence of fear, it is doing something when fear tells you otherwise. if you feel you have something to offer to the world, do it. put it out there, and if someone shoots you down, learn from it and move on.

Without authors this site and others like it wouldn't survive, never let a "wannabe" literature critic stop you from achieving your goal.

That's just my thoughts!

Shuggie....
