I wrote back to an author a couple of weeks ago. The story was good but the author put several quotes together in a paragraph with no separation. It made it hard to figure out who was talking. I also suggested using a spell check and maybe a grammar check.
I had started out complimenting the author and I tried to gently make my suggestions. I even offered to edit her work.

I got a furious reply, telling me that I wasn't her English teacher and other non-post-able comments.
I almost never write an author, but this reply left me puzzled. I think that I personally would be gracious and thank someone suggesting help. What did I did I do wrong?

Spring is Springing!

You did nothing wrong, the Author responding just over reacted, it happens.

In fact one author I wrote too, put a request right at the beginning of his story, indicating that he wanted feedback. The situatuion he wrote about was hot enough, but his writing was so muddled that I had a hard time following. I sent him some suggestions, he came unglued. Obviously he only wanted positive feedback.

If they don't like our suggestions, it's their loss.

Many authors are fiercely protective of their work. Even when an editor is invited to read a piece and comment there is sometimes a very adverse reaction to criticism, especially of grammar. I have been told by an author that I was wrong about a grammatical matter, "because thats (sic) the way I always write". My comment was on the difference between 'there' and 'their'.

I guess i can see both sides of this coin, being on the receiving end of feedback can both be elating, and infuriating at the same time, but the bottom line that most authors have to appreciate it

"if you put your head above the parapit, you should expect someone to want to take a pot shot"

Personally, i know that my writing style is different from most, i've had comments about it, and i don't have a problem with it. yes, sometimes i don't edit thoroughly enough, and i miss things. Again, i take that one squarely on the chin.

But, without me, and numerous other AMATEUR authors, there wouldn't be stories to read.

To be an author, you have to grow a thick skin at times, my pet peeve is being given a vote of 1 and getting a response like "you're story was crap"

i don't have a problem getting low votes, if the person is happy to explain where i went wrong. credit where credit is due, regardless of whether i like their opinion, i respect it.

One of my earlier stories got a Vote of 1.....for.....their and there.....

granted, i had made the mistake about thirty times, the rest of the story was good and the story finished with an average vote of 8.92. as an author that tells me that if 45 people give me solid nines and one gives me a one.....then either that person is voting tactically or they're looking for a job as a literature critic.

If truth be told, i only post on this site for one reason, this isn't a site, it is almost like a community. i've learned the hard way that destructive feedback is soul destroying (i even stopped writing for months because of it) what authors should realise is that the moment we hit send, we open ourselves up for all forms of critisism.

Readers should also note that biting the hand that feeds you isn't clever. especially when most authors will gladly accept constructive critisism.

My rules are simple,

As an author, if you give me a low vote and don't explain, expect a sharp response. if you give me a low vote and have an explanation, regardless of whether i agree, you still have my respect.

As a reader,

if i can't give a 6 or more, i won't vote, but that author deserves an explanation why i wouldn't vote. i try to be as constructive as possible, if they don't like my opinion, it's their loss, not mine.

what we all have to remember is, we all have bad days, we all have high hopes for stories and watching them die a death is heartbreaking at times.

Did this author lash out because of dissappointment? we will never know.

For many it is easy to say "i can do better" the sad truth of life is, until we walk a mile in another person's shoes, we'll never know.

Art and most of the established authors have worked hard to make this more than just a story site, it would be a shame to let that community spirit go to the wall, because we can't be constructive or can't take critisism.

But then again, that is just my thoughts on the matter.

It's silly to give someone a 1 because of a grammatical mistake or two. However, if there are so many errors that the story is unreadable, then yes, it could warrant a 1. I am guilty of grammatical errors and typos myself, but I have a grasp of basic English. If a story is so poorly written on a technical level it doesn't matter if you have an interesting story to tell. Mastering how to write is just as important as having a good imagination. Imagine a film with a great script and great acting, but a terrible director. Or if you want to build a table, but don't know how to use your tools. You can't do it. And you cannot call yourself a writer if you don't have some grasp of the technical aspects of writing.

And before anyone argues that something is their "style," keep in mind that you need to know the rules before you break them. Most of the time I know when I am writing an incomplete sentence, but I am doing it effect and most of the sentences around it are not incomplete. If I write a story in incomplete sentences because I do not know better, or if I do not put quotation marks around my characters' speech, that's not my style, it's ignorance.

If you don't know grammar, find a good editor to work with and hopefully you will learn as you go.

I've never given a 1, and I've never finished a "1" story, but I have seen them on here.

Greetings:

I have had many of my stories given a 1 or a low score and as Shuggie suggested; voting tactically is very common in our venue.

It is done by fans to bolster the scores of their favorite authors and by Authors to keep their stories in the forefront by logging in on multiple computers under multiple logins and then voting low.

Here, Art does a great job in weeding out the trolls and to delete pattern voting

On xnxx in the stories section, my latest story “Christmas Angel” received 3 negative votes and 3 positive votes giving me an overall score of 50%.

The result is that it is taken off the main page because of the 50% rating and not even read by many or even given a chance because it is mostly ignored as a poor story because of the mentioned rating.

Here it is presently rated 9.71 out of 14 votes with two positive comments and I wish to thank everyone, especially my fans that inspire me to keep writing no matter how average it is.

Again Shuggie is right; this site is almost a community which is why I post here and use it as the litmus test.

Admittedly my stories do not contain the vicarious luridness that many people look for and they then vote according to their tastes.

I will never be in the same class as Jean Sibelius, 1865 to 1957.
However he said something that puts things in perspective regarding deliberate and often times undeserved low votes and nasty comments.

He said “Pay no attention to what critics say, a statue has never been erected in honor of a critic”.

Sincerely,
beagle9690

Why are people working so hard to avoid naming other story websites? It's a little silly.
