I haven't been writing for the site long but i have written long enough to see that a majority of the readers enjoy what we do and how we put our imagination on paper. BUT then we come to the jerk who thinks he is a professional critic who has no idea about life, stories, and in some cases sex. There is one reader that usually gives a 1 on his voting. To me this man seems like he thrives on being an idiot. If most of the stories he reads only warrants a 1 why bother reading any of them. To me he only wants to down the true voting scores. i really don't rely too much on the voting scores as most readers have their preferences on what they want or what they expect, but it is really nice, as i am sure that most will agree, to score high is an ego builder. To those who read our stories and give realistic and honest votes, i salute you, to those who really think they are being cute, please stand back and take a peak in the mirror, i am sure you opion of yourself will change. Am i wrong with these thoughts or are there others that feel as i do... Billy Jack

Hi billy Jack
Have you tried writing to your unwanted critic and asked them why they felt your story deserved a 1. Sometimes the simple act of questioning the readers valuation of your work is enough to make them stop.
You might mention that you, like most of the authors on this site, are an amateur, that you give your time and effort freely for the entertainment of others and that they may wish to be more considerate in their voting.
Alternatively you could politely ask them not to vote on your stories in future.
It probably wont work but it is worth a try.
Generally, most readers are generous with their votes and appreciative with their comments ... maybe it is better to focus on them and leave this one individual to do as they will ... water, ducks and back seem appropriate words.

The Views/Reads to Voting ratio on this site is pretty low. Sometimes amazingly so. But for the most part that may be a good thing. This is a pretty small website compared to others however the Troll to true Fan ratio is exceptionally nice.
I got my first ever "1 vote" recently. After some research, he turned out to be another author that has a history of trying to tear down his imagined 'competition'. Under the guise of 'humor' he is one of a few hear that try to manipulate the system.
If he does it just one time, let it slide unnoticed. If it happens again formally request that he refrain from reading or voting on your stories and send a copy of the email to the system Admins.
A third time?
I'd alert Art, the webmaster, and then publicly post his reader and/or author accounts names here. If his stories suffer a sudden attack of group criticism that matches the level of his own, that may deter him.
Then again it may not . . . you never know with this type.
Don't let it discourage you too much. The best thing to do is take this kind of attention as the backhanded kind of compliment it usually is.
Is Billy Jack your Author account name? I might swing by and cancel his vote!
You aren't alone in this. My last story received a lot of 10's and 9's and then I got a 4. I try not to think about it but sometimes it bugs me. I would like to know what they didn't like about my story. After being on here for a while I still get a little peeved but I just shrug it off. Some people like them and that works for me

Having been here for something like 10 years I gave up trying to figure out how people vote a long time ago. I take the high votes as an ego stroke and ignore the low votes with no constructive critisism. At least it's not like back in the day when voting wasn't limited and people would vote for themselves mulitple times to boost their scores.
It seems that most Authors who achieve a reasonably high average vote are palgued with Troll Votes.
At times it bugs the hell out of me, but I do my best to ignore them and applaud those who provide feedback no matter if I like what they have to say or not.
As cumgirl suggested I send an ES-mail to those who vote that way, most never respond, and it may be the same individual just using multiple Alias'. That said, I have received some very informative replies, great critiques, and pointers all of which have contributed to my continued improvement.

Hi. I am new to the author part of this site and so I do not want to overstep my bounds. However, I was thinking that maybe it should be required that a vote of 5 or less also include a comment on why that vote was low. Even if it was from a preloaded list "disliked characters", "unbelievable scenerio", etc...
Of course this would just cause those 1's and 4's to be 6's, but it was a thought.

Hi bedandbeth
Unless it has changed recently, I think you will find that if you do give a vote below 5 you are required to send an ESMail to the Author before your vote is accepted. Unfortunately this just results in comments like ... "It was shit" ... which are never very helpful. Generally you will see a few 5 votes but very few below it because of this reason.

And now I'm going to be controversial.
I think that nearly all the Author's scores are too high (and yes, I am happy to include myself in that).
Furthermore, the introduction of the 'Reader Profiles' has caused the average vote to rise by about a point on average (ie. stories that were scoring in the low 8's are now scoring in the low 9's.
Nowadays average stories are scoring consistently above 9.
Personally, I would like to see the readers being more demanding and critical.
... guess, I'd better not publish anything for a while cause its gonna get slated.
Any thoughts?
