I submitted my first story today, and like an anxious parent waited for the grades to come in. I'm happy to say that it appears my first effort will be good enough to "qualify".

But I was nervous for a while...I had excellent views/reads percentages and I was happy with my overall vote count. But I couldn't help but peek at everyone else's scores.

In the old black/white world of the SAT test, I would assume most of the authors here came down on the verbal side of the scale. I was extremely balanced, which is another way of saying I'm not really great at anything. But it made me wonder...what kind of story gets the most votes? The highest read rates? The best scores?

I don't know if anyone else ever did this analysis. I searched the past year for "statistics" "stats" and "numbers." I didn't find anything. I'm a new author, so the results were surprising to me. Maybe everyone else here will go, "Duh!"

By a large margin, the multi-part stories got more votes, generally higher scores and higher both view and read rates.

I thought story type would be important, and story length a contributing factor. That did not seem to be the case. I saw no trends in story type or word count. (Admittedly, my sample size was very small.

Alright fellow authors, why do you suppose this is so? What else do you think contributes to high scores? How could you explain high view/read ratios with low vote counts? What can an author do to improve on any of these?

Thanks for your input!

I've never used scientific method, but I did notice I got better votes on my MF stories. One could say I was better at that, but the comments I received were about equal so I don't know.

When taking in this option I went and looked at story dates. MF is always generating more stories than the other categories. While to some that might mean that the other categories have a better chance of getting more reads/votes because they stay "new" longer. To me it shows that the MF pool is larger (of course) and because it is more of the standard you get more views/reads & by odds votes. And - in my experience - they aren't nearly as harsh!

MF? I couldn't find a catagory that seemed to fit.

Thanks for your response!

I always type MF but on the site it's listed as "fm:straight" in the categories option.

Interesting idea - using statistics to assess erotica. It shouldn't be too hard to put the data (reads/scores/word numbers/etc.) in a spreadsheet then use that to look for correlations. Sounds like a project for a rainy weekend.

I have found that posting stories on Friday or Saturday generates a lot more reads and scores (not necessarily better scores) than posting during the week.

The multipart stories show more reads and votes because the numbers you are seeing are accrued for all parts. If you're up to part six of a story the number of votes you're seeing are for all six parts, not the part just posted. That can work for you if you're getting good votes, but bury you if you're not.

I notice the more I write for me the higher my votes. I also haven't applied a process to it so I'm not sure what does the best. I have written about a few of my experiences and those do pretty well too. I write for me because I've learned that no matter how many ppl love it there will be some that hate it and if you love it then that's what matters. I do wish I could get more reads and such but I'm happy with my loyal few.
