I submitted my first story today, and like an anxious parent waited for the grades to come in. I'm happy to say that it appears my first effort will be good enough to "qualify".
But I was nervous for a while...I had excellent views/reads percentages and I was happy with my overall vote count. But I couldn't help but peek at everyone else's scores.
In the old black/white world of the SAT test, I would assume most of the authors here came down on the verbal side of the scale. I was extremely balanced, which is another way of saying I'm not really great at anything. But it made me wonder...what kind of story gets the most votes? The highest read rates? The best scores?
I don't know if anyone else ever did this analysis. I searched the past year for "statistics" "stats" and "numbers." I didn't find anything. I'm a new author, so the results were surprising to me. Maybe everyone else here will go, "Duh!"
By a large margin, the multi-part stories got more votes, generally higher scores and higher both view and read rates.
I thought story type would be important, and story length a contributing factor. That did not seem to be the case. I saw no trends in story type or word count. (Admittedly, my sample size was very small.
Alright fellow authors, why do you suppose this is so? What else do you think contributes to high scores? How could you explain high view/read ratios with low vote counts? What can an author do to improve on any of these?
Thanks for your input!
