It shouldn't be a big thing, but it drives me crazy.

I write a lot of stories in the first person, sometimes with male and sometimes female narrators. When I write one from a female POV I always get at least one response from a reader calling me by the first name of the character, offering various sexual favors. Not long ago I got two responses on the same day from the same person on two different stories. Each one seemed to assume that the narrator was a real person, even though they had different names and were in vastly different circumstances. He must have found the second story through my profile, which should have told him that they were written by the same person.

Do people not understand the concept of fiction?

And why does this irritate me so?

I suppose I should be happy that the stories are written well enough that some people think they are true - but it still drives me batty.

Have others had this experience, and how do you respond?

I used to get this response when I first started posting, though not within in the last 6 or 7 - though I still get some very interesting responses and offers. The conclusion I came to is this - the fantasy doesn't stop where the story does.

Some readers get so into it and unlike a hot movie or book they have the opportunity to comment and share all the dirty nasty things your words have inspired in his/her mind. The easiest thing is to take it with the general intent it was given - as a compliment.

IMHO you probably get annoyed because you take your work seriously and these reactions could possibly be perceived as demeaning.

So, as a friend once told me, "let it turn you on when it can, and if it turns you off ignore it." Hardly profound, but fitting for so much in life...

I get that too, but don't really mind.... for the reasons JayLynn specifies.

Most bizarrely, I got more such comments for the first story I wrote from a male perspective (but they knew I am female as the propositions made it clear).

What gets to me is requests for photos (more photos, or better photos).

Interesting topic. My repertoire of content is not that vast, but I do get a lot of feed back.

My first couple stories elicitied a lot of pointers from other writers. That was great and I took a lot of it to heart, I have also got a lot of feedback from fans that follow each story through to the end and comment each and every time I add a chapter. Again those fans are great and really apreciated.

So far I have wrote all of my stories in the third party context. I find this allows me some flexibility in being a nimble writer. In any case my point for repsonding is that I use an Alias that would indicate the Author to be female and I must say some of the feed back I get is downright off the charts.

When I chose my Alias it was simply the reason anyone might use an alias to hide your real identity, plus I wondered if anyone would recognize the true gender of the Author. Well I never bargained on all the offer's or the comments about how it must have been fun or otherwise to experieince various scenes. One guy even posted "you can always tell when a woman describes a...".

Yes this is FICTION... but most people seem to want to believe that it actually happened. The ones that scare me are those reponses that suggest if it worked for you I am going to try it. I quickly reply to those that this is Fiction... not my experience... not even my fantasy... just plain old creative fiction.

Another kind of feed back I find odd but have learned alot from, are those who read your story and then ask for feed back on one of their own. One such occurance led to me writing a story for the fan. Surprisingly everything seemed to flow none stop. I had the fan edit the story's content to make sure it met his/her real fantasy. I must say it might have been the most fun I have had writing so far.

Cheers,

Scott

I've gotten emails from people thinking that the stories are true as long as I've been writing. it doesn't even seem to matter if they are written in the first person. Not sure why it bothers you. I like it because it means I connected with the reader.
