For some, writing is about inspiration, for others it's about hard graft, although there are certain ways you can start.
For me, the inspiration can be someone i see and like, a phrase that inspres me, or a fantasy that i would like to fulfill.
As humans we naturally fantasise, M*sterb*tion requires the concept of fantasy, the hard part is taking that dream and turning it into words.
I generally start with the bones, write a brief idea of how it starts, e.g met girl at work, started chatting, went to pub, got drunk, girl stumbles into my arms, first kiss, back to my place. sex (what type) then round it up.
Second part is filling in the story with a believable situations, then work on the continuity, Final the edit, this is the most important part that i sometimes do quickly and pay the price for.
Read it out loud, if something doesn't sound right to you, then it is unlikely to sound right to others, change the sentence, paragraph or how ever much till you are happy with it. then submit it.
The biggest clue to how you are doing is feedback, in general most people will be honest and give you good feedback, whether the story is good or bad, never take critism to heart, learn from it, yet look at the over all picture. if 7 people love your story and one says it was rubbish and the story is rated 8 or above, then be polite and acknoledge the feedback but explain that most of the feedback has been good, it will suprise you how many will go back and read it again.
Hope that helps
