I don't care much for the voters, I would just like for people to read what I write. lol

I admit I do get a little jealous when I see people having thousands of readers. I will get there one day

Just found this thead, I thought I was the only person plagued by the "5" voter. All I know is that I had a story that was briefly number one on the site and then I started getting 5's literally as soon as I posted new chapters in the story, almost so fast that there was no way anyone could have read the thing.

I'd prefer a system more like Digg where you don't rate, you just vote to promote a particular story..

I have to admit that I had read this thread and knew what every one meant (mostly because of the poetry site I post to) but I had never experienced the "rude" voter issue. Then I tried my hand at posting in the MF section and suddenly I was being hit with random low balls.

Amazing the stories posted there are still doing well, but I realized then what everyone was saying. Why low ball people and then not leave a message or advice. Hell you can even leave public feedback on my stories so I really don't get it...

What I find funny is that if I click on the voters name they usually have a clear path of destruction. That usually makes me even more mad. Like if I see that my 5 or 6 was in a string of 5's and 6's then I know that the voter is just being a brat... If it's a 6 and two other stories read that day have like 9's or 8's then I can accept that hey, maybe they really didn't like it.

I like the reads. I like the voting. I love the comments. Maybe there should be mandatory commenting when voting.

I really prefer a system where you can only vote "postitively".... if there's going to be a voting system. I also think the more accurate number is probably the number of 9-10's a story gets total. Say if 50 people give it a 10....and 50 people give it a 1..the story averages 5.5 but I bet it's a way better story than one that gets nothing but 7's......

I think the voting thing is as accurate a way as possible to get the feel for what the average reader thinks of your story. Like so many others have said why get hung up on a couple of low scores, it just takes away from what you are really trying to achieve.

If you have checked out the profile of the voter and found that they consistantly dole out low votes, perhaps that individual is a stickler for Spelling, Grammar, and is more critical of the typical components required to create a story that flows smoothly. If you are writing to achieve the highest score on the site then it might be worthwhile to take some writing instruction or to use an EDITOR if you can find one, and if that does not do it for you... work on being able to accept the vote.

I must say that I have read a number of stories that have had a high average rating of over 9, and found it incredibly hard to follow, continually distracted by spelling errors, or improper use of a word... and in some cases I have found writers getting their charachters mixed up. Sure the story might be HOT but there were enough errors to be more than just a bit distracting. That story will get a low score from me, and as often as possible a comment explaining it.

I too write to achieve a high readership and an above average score but my first goal is to enjoy the story that I write myself.

Sorry for the annonymous post, but I forgot my log in info.

Part of this whole issue is to do with the fact that MOST raters seem to use just the top end of the scale - but some use the whole range. Thus, for most, 5 is "crap" but for some 5 is what the scale says ("reasonable").

Also, especially in less read categories, first votes are probably from fans, then you get more general readership, especially if your story gets into the top table - it might be not an author trying to sabotage you, but simply a reader who saw a highly ranked story, read and didn't like it. You are more likely to find them if exposed in the top table than if readers have to get to yours via categories etc...

Its nice to get votes. Recently I posted a new story that is doing great. The first 11 votes were 10's and then suddenly I got a 5. There was no reasoning or anyone saying this is why I didn't like it. I don't care that I got the 5 I just want to know what the person didn't like about it. It might have been something different that hasn't been mentioned before.

Personally if I think someone's story isn't that great I tell them why and I like feedback no matter if its good or bad.
